Buying Goats
I have been bug eyed on the goat world for the last 10 months or so. It has been interesting to say the least. I am slowly learning about how it all works.
1. I thought that semen was always expensive. It is expensive until someone wants to make room for more. Then the price drops. Sometimes a lot. This is why people hoard semen. They got it for a good deal.
2. I thought that a goat was a goat and the price reflected actual hard value. No, actually it depends a variety of factors. For instance, if the seller trusts/likes you . It also depends on how many goats you are getting in a group. It depends on the class of animal and what time of the year you are selling. A buckling with high quality genetics born as a late May kid just might sell for a significant discount over a junior herdsire which was reserved before he was even born.
3. Very few goats hit the open market on Facebook. The majority of quality animals are sold before they make it that far. If you want a quality animal, then talk to your local breeders and let them know what you are looking for. Chances are that if you wait for that "perfect" goat to hit the social medias at the right price, it will be snapped up before you even see it. Sometimes you find that perfect goat but that isn't how it usually works.
